Grab your Overobuntu SD card.

Now, you can get Ubuntu running on your Gumstix Overo quickly and easily. Grab your Overobuntu SD Card, and get back to business.

The card is formatted properly and should boot on any of the Gumstix Overo COM devices, with the proper kernel modules. Ubuntu with the LXDE packages are pre-installed.

UPDATE: You can now purchase the cards through my online store at https://sites.google.com/a/catalyzingconcepts.com/catalyzing-concepts/portfolio/overobuntu. Thanks!

Can I put this SD card into my overo straight out of the box and boot Ubuntu or do I need to add some software to the Overo first before I can do boot Ubuntu?

Also, how fast does Ubuntu run on the Overo? Is there a lot of lag when launching a web browser or watching videos?

Hey DNN,

Sorry for the late response!! For some reason, I didn't get the normal email reply that I get when someone leaves a comment here.

So, first question: Yes, you can put the SD card into the overo straight out of the box. However, it uses the LXDE packages instead of the standard GNOME packages. If you're interested, I can send you a standard GNOME installation as well, but it's pretty slow.

To respond to the second question, it's pretty slow when running GNOME. However, the OMAP3503 / 3530 processors have a video DSP on them that's supposed to make things like video compression and decompression very fast (especially H.264-type videos). I'm not sure if Ubuntu takes advantage of this special processing capability.

Hi John,

I happen to see your post over at Nabble regarding a LVDS Daughter board for Overo or Vertex Pro Gumstix boards.

Actually, I'm currently working on an e-book reader, for which I'm trying to use a bigger LCD of 7" or 8". Are you done with you LVDS daughter board. If so I would be interested in buying one.

Please, let me know.

Thanks
Vivek

Hey Vivek.

I've actually re-factored the LVDS device. It connects directly to the Palo43 board, and can drive an LVDS screen with 5V LED backlights. I think this may be more useful to the masses.

I'm still squishing the last bugs in the schematics, and working on getting the Palo43 board for testing (funding is tight this month -- maybe in August). I'll update you when I'm there. ;-) Thanks for your interest.

Hey,

This is awesome! I will definitely buy this if I end up getting an Overo. BTW, does this support the Palo43 driver wise, or will I need to pull those from somewhere else. Thanks for making this available!

Hi John, nice work, this has been helpul! I managed to make a SD card and boot gnome Ubuntu using your instructions posted earlier, but it doesn't seem to have working ethernet or wifi, both are pretty crucial to my project (a small UAV). They do both work if I boot Angstrom linux isntead. On the installation on the cards you sell, do all the drivers for that stuff work out of the box? If not, any chance you could point me in the right direction for fixing that on my install?

Thanks, and great work!

Hi! I'm really amazed about your blog. Quick question though. Let's say I want to use this SD card for a mini PC project using a touch screen http://www.gumstix.com/store/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=243. What I want to know is will the ubuntu installation recognize the touch screen (I'm planning on using the chestnut 43 expansion board) Please keep up the good work.

Quick question. These are full sized SD cards? Or the micro-SD cards that the overo actually takes? Also I have a few devices I want to run with this, one is a UVC capable webcam. Does your image contain modules or drivers for this?

Cheers

@navarre: Sorry, I didn't get an email showing your comment was posted!!! I only saw it just now (2 months later), so I'll respond to yours first. The card comes with all of the drivers installed from the bitbaked Angstrom distribution. All the modules that worked there will work in overobuntu.

@Keegan: Yes, the drivers for the ethernet and wifi on all of the boards should be included in the Angstrom distribution. I've edited the blog (at the end) with a comment posted on the Gumstix mailing list on getting the modules up and running. I hope it helps! Something to keep in mind with the Overobuntu: I haven't yet figured out how to get it running in Runlevel 3 or to get a tty or pty running while in Runlevel 5. That means you can't really log in from Kermit (since there is no terminal). There have been some complaints that users were unable to log in without attaching the gumstix to a monitor. I'm working on a fix for it, but haven't found anything yet.

@Robot: If you follow the instructions at the end "How to get Modules Working", you should find what you need. It's not in tutorial format yet, but should be enough to get you up and running.

@Chris:
These are the micro-sd cards required by the Overo. The card that you will get has all of the modules pre-installed, so you don't have to do anything when you get it -- it should be just pop in and go. HOWEVER, note that I am using the modules from the angstrom distribution. Any modules that aren't included in a bitbake aren't going to be there -- just a caveat. As long as you aren't using hardware that's too exotic, I don't see a problem.

Hmm...sorry for asking this, but can you show the URL for "How to get Modules Working?"

John said...

@Robot:
Sorry -- I think I was responding to another message and directed the response at you by mistake. I'm not sure if it will work properly with the Chestnut43 board, but I'm fairly confident that it will. It uses the same modules that gumstix uses for their default Linux O.S., so I don't see why it wouldn't work. Unfortunately, I have not yet had the chance to try it, so I can't say for sure that it will work.

Hey all,

I've added another update to th instructions to show how to get a tty terminal up and running on your gumstix when booting in Ubuntu. Check it out at http://johnwoconnor.blogspot.com/2009/04/installing-ubuntu-on-gumstix-overo.html, and scroll to the end of the post.

p.s. i am using a overo fire com with a chestnut43 board and a samsung lcd if that matters

Hey Joel,

Hmm -- no, there isn't anything you need to do. It should work right out of the box. Can you give me the details of how you have your board hooked up? (HDMI or through USB)? I fully test all of the cards before they ship out, but you never know what can happen in transit.

Send it back to me if you can't get it to work, and I'll test it again (a standard letter with 2 postage stamps should work for shipping). My address is on the envelope and on the invoice, but you can also email me if you need it.

If the card is defective, I'll send you a new one right away. If not, I'll try to get to the bottom of the problem or refund you.

Sorry about that! I hope we can get it to work.
